About Abraxas Adams

It is through Art and through Art only that we can realize our perfection; through Art and Art only that we can shield ourselves from the sordid perils of actual existence.

My bedroom on Fulton Street in San Francisco in the early 1990s. The artwork on the wall behind me was made by my friend David Zimmerman.

Formative Years

I was born in New Hampshire and grew up in Sharon, Massachusetts, a place with a lot of history and natural beauty. The house we lived in was very old and had once been a turkey farm. We rented the house from Mrs. White until 1976 when she sold the house to Mrs. Green.

My pediatrician was named Dr. Koffin and my dentist was Dr. Knight. The surgeon who implanted the titanium plate in my face after my bike accident was named Dr. Kingdom. The V-shaped plate shows up in dental X-rays but does not trigger metal detectors at the airport.

One of my favorite childhood memories is of my mother playing the piano while summer birds sang in the fragrant apple tree outside the window, a gentle snow of pink and white petals floating down in the sunlight. This vision returns to me in dreams sometimes. Most of my sense of meaning comes from experiences of beauty with a texture of the unique and intentional, like instruction from a parallel reality.

Wishes

I moved to San Francisco in 1992

I spend a good deal of time reading, listening to music and getting exercise, mostly by riding my bike around town. There are few things nicer than a day in Golden Gate Park, followed by dinner in the Castro and dancing South of Market.

Other really cool SF activities include spending a weekend at a Transhumanist conference, learning about the most recent breakthroughs in science and technology and discussing how to make sure advancements are applied for the good of humankind.

I am fortunate to be Director of Operations at an amazing education nonprofit that does big things on very small budgets, like advocating for evidence-based medicine and promoting overlooked innovations. Nonprofits don’t pay handsomely but I find the work very rewarding. I manage a wide range of tasks so my day has a lot of variety.

I most enjoy spending my personal time making art—photographs, videos, writings, animations. My primary artistic goals are to entertain, share insights that have brought me back from the edge during painful transformations, to stimulate curiosity and empathy, and investigate the fascinating, beautiful and strange nature of reality.

Love and Light!
